Evan Ferguson could require ankle surgery after suffering a left ankle injury on loan at Roma, Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler said on Thursday. The striker has returned to the Serie A club for a second opinion after an initial assessment back in Sussex ahead of Sunday’s home game against Nottingham Forest.

“He said he learned a lot. That is most important for players on loan, to learn something from a new environment, new culture, new style of play,” he told The Athletic.

Ferguson last played on 22 January in the Europa League against Stuttgart. He has five goals and two assists in 22 appearances, logging 1,078 minutes for Roma this season.

Hurzeler said decisions on how to proceed will follow medical advice and that surgery remains only a possibility for now.

“But after the conversation I had with him I feel quite confident and positive that we might see a different Evan Ferguson.”

Republic of Ireland hope the injury will not rule the 21-year-old out of World Cup qualifying play-offs against the Czech Republic on 26 March, then Denmark or North Macedonia on 31 March. Brighton’s Yasin Ayari is back in full training after a dislocated shoulder and Saturday’s 2-0 win at Brentford.
