The Athletic reports that Everton could turn to Ridle Baku if their move for Alistair Johnston from Celtic does not materialise, with Johnston still considered the priority.

David Moyes’ side used centre-back Jake O’Brien at right-back during the 2025/26 campaign, and Séamus Coleman has now left after nearly two decades of service.

Baku, 28, is entering the final year of his RB Leipzig contract, although an appearance-based clause could extend it by one year next season.

He joined Leipzig from Wolfsburg at the start of 2025 for €4.5 million. Under new coach Martín Demichelis, he is likely to compete with Benjamin Henrichs for a starting berth if he stays.

Negotiations with the Scottish champions have been difficult so far. Johnston, 27, was among the standouts in Canada’s historic World Cup run, while Baku did not make Germany’s squad.
