Everton enter Saturday’s home clash with Aston Villa aiming to prove their strong start is no fluke by ending a torturous run against their ultimate bogey team.
While recent victories have lifted David Moyes’ side into the top six, they now face an opponent against whom they have not won since 2016 and have failed to score against in their last four home games. This fixture represents a crucial test of whether Everton’s newfound confidence is enough to overcome years of historical dominance by the visitors.
David Moyes’ primary selection issues are in defence, where he faces a potential shortage of options. Key centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite is a major doubt with a hamstring injury, while knocks to full-backs Nathan Patterson and Vitalii Mykolenko are also expected to rule them out.
This will likely force a reshuffle, with Jake O’Brien and James Garner expected to fill the wide defensive roles. In midfield, Idrissa Gueye and Tim Iroegbunam or new signing Merlin Rohl could provide a solid platform.
The focus for Everton, however, will be on their potent attack. All eyes are on Jack Grealish, who can become the first player in Premier League history to provide two or more assists in three consecutive matches if he does so against his former club.
He will be supported by the industrious Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who has been a revelation in a creative role. Up front, Beto is the favourite to lead the line after scoring before the break, though Thierno Barry is pushing hard for a starting place.
Everton predicted XI: Pickford; O’Brien, Tarkowski, Keane, Garner; Gueye, Iroegbunam; Ndiaye, Dewsbury-Hall, Grealish; Beto
The Premier League fixture will be played at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, 13 September 2025, with kick-off scheduled for 3 pm BST.
The match will not be broadcast live in the UK due to the 3 pm blackout. Live text commentary and updates will be available via BBC Sport.
