Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Wedson Nyirenda has showered praise on Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou and the Buccaneers for their outstanding performances this season.

The Sea Robbers currently top the Betway Premiership standings, sitting two points ahead of reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns, with a game in hand.

What’s more, Pirates have already lifted the MTN8 trophy, clinched the Carling Knockout Cup—their first League Cup triumph since the 2011/12 campaign—and also secured the Carling Cup.

Speaking to Foot Africa, Nyirenda lauded Ouaddou, who took over from Jose Riveiro during the off-season, for making an instant impact at the helm of the Pirates.

“Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has really settled in well and is building on the solid foundation left by his predecessor. In a short time, he’s managed to collect three trophies. He’s a straightforward but intelligent coach,” remarked the Zambian tactician.

While Ouaddou’s side has largely dominated the first half of the South African top flight, they did bow out of the CAF Champions League in the second preliminary round.

However, Nyirenda—who famously led Baroka FC to Telkom Knockout glory at Pirates’ expense in 2018—believes the Bucs’ early exit could be a blessing in disguise as they chase the elusive league title.

“They’ve started strongly and falling out of the CAF Champions League should be seen as a blessing in disguise, allowing them to focus on the domestic league,” he added.

“They’re playing with real cohesion and attacking flair. Their frontline is one of the most dangerous in the league. Their only real concern should be finding a replacement for [Mbekezeli] Mbokazi.”

Pirates will resume their Betway Premiership campaign with a clash against Sekhukhune United at Peter Mokaba Stadium on 24 January, after the conclusion of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
