The Sky Sports pundit names Wolves, Leeds United, Fulham and Ipswich Town as his favourites

Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has named four Championship sides as the ones he has most enjoyed watching since the 16/17 season.

Over the last decade, there have been some phenomenal sides playing in the second tier that have looked a cut above the rest.

Just last season, we saw Burnley concede the least amount of goals in English league history, with 16, whilst going on a 33-game unbeaten run - all to end up second to Daniel Farke's Leeds United.

Seeing as Goodman has regularly attended Championship matches as a pundit for nearly double that amount of time, it's fair to say he's seen all that and more.

In an exclusive interview, he told FLW who the standout sides have been in his eyes.

These may not necessarily be the best teams in terms of stats - but were the sides that have given him the most fun watching on from the press box.

"So, for clarity, I'm not saying these were the best teams - I would prefer to say these were the teams that I enjoyed watching the most over the last ten years," when reflecting on the past 10 years of his Championship coverage.

First to be mentioned was the 17/18 Wolves team that featured the Portuguese duo of Diogo Jota and Ruben Neves.

"Starting with Wolves," Goodman told FLW.

"That team with Diogo Jota and Ruben Neves, arguably the best players the Championship has seen really, sensational."

Managed, of course, by another Portuguese in Nuno Espirito Santo, that Wolves team certainly had a level of technical excellence that was not only a joy to watch, but helped end their six-year spell in the Championship.

Upon winning the title with a club-record 99 points, the aforementioned Jota scored 17 league goals and Neves made sure he repaid the £15.8m the club spent on him week in, week out - which was a Championship record at the time.

Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United secured the second mention by Goodman.

"Obviously, Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds team were just so entertaining, it was just lovely to go and watch Leeds United games," he reflected.

The Argentinian led the Whites from 13th-placed mediocrity in 17/18 under Paul Heckingbottom into Championship title winners by 19/20.

El Loco's first season in charge ended with the play-off semi-final hiccup against 'Spygate' side Derby County, but even then, he had completely changed the club's style of play.

In fact, it was probably the most aggressive football the second-tier - and England - had ever seen, and perhaps what made them so enjoyable for Goodman to watch.

One main aspect was that Bielsa had his players pressing hard to win the ball back as soon as they lost it, which made for a very high-paced match.

While Goodman didn't mention any specific players, four of them (Kalvin Phillips, Luke Ayling, Ben White and Liam Cooper) earned a spot in the PFA Team Of The Year that promotion winning season - and three (Pablo Hernandez, Cooper and Pontus Jansson) the year before.

Thirdly, for their extraordinary numbers in front of goal, Fulham's 21/22 side was name-dropped.

Goodman said: "Fulham, highest scorers that I can remember - 106 goals - Mitrovic, 43 goals. Don’t think they can be overlooked."

Under Marco Silva's guidance, Mitrovic's 43 league goals shattered the previous benchmark for a 46-game season, surpassing Portsmouth's Guy Whittingham's 31-goal record set in 92/93 and Ivan Toney's second-tier record of the same number.

Ipswich Town earn honorary mention from Don Goodman

Notably, Goodman extended his initial three selections and offered enthusiastic praise for 23/24 Ipswich Town.

"And I enjoyed Ipswich Town, the journey, they scored so many late, dramatic winners. They were a great watch, so there's four for you."

Although they're the only club Goodman has said to be back playing in the Championship this season, Kieran McKenna's side securing back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League deserved a mention in his view.

The first club since Southampton in 2012 to achieve this feat, the Tractor Boys certainly shocked the rest of the division as much as they did to Goodman.
