The Latics have been eyeing a move for Wiredu since the early stages of the transfer window, and it was reported that they had bid for the Cod Army man back on 10th January.

As per Wigan Today, Shaun Maloney's men were put off by Fleetwood's valuation earlier in the window, but recently became hopeful of completing the move following the sale of former star man Thelo Aasgaard, who joined Championship outfit Luton Town, in a move initially reported by FLW.

The Latics received a fee of around £3.5 million for Aasgaard's services, and would have wanted to invest some of that money towards a swoop for Wiredu.

However, FLW can now exclusively report that the Greater Manchester club will be unable to complete their move for the Cod Army captain, due to issues highlighted by his medical.

Wiredu news will come as a blow for Latics

Following Saturday's 1-1 draw with Lincoln City, the Latics are now 16th in the League One table, nine points above the relegation zone, and 10 points below the play-off spots.

Maloney's men have largely struggled for consistency, while long-term injuries suffered by central midfield trio Matt Smith, Tyrese Francois and Baba Adeeko have come as a dent to their hopes of climbing the league.

The Latics responded to those setbacks by completing the loan addition of midfielder Ollie Norburn from fellow third tier club Blackpool, but have still been reliant on the likes of inexperienced academy graduate Harry McHugh in recent weeks.

The signing of a versatile player such as Wiredu would have been ideal for Maloney and co in their current circumstances, so news that he has failed his medical is far from ideal for Maloney and co, who now have just hours remaining of the transfer window to try and find an alternative addition.
