Cameroon has been knocked out of the race for qualification to the 2026 World Cup.

On Thursday, the Indomitable Lions fell to DR Congo by the narrowest of margins in the semi-final of the African playoff.

This defeat has reignited the question: Should Marc Brys continue as head coach of Cameroon for AFCON 2025?

To answer this, Foot Africa gathered the thoughts of Cameroonian coach Thierry Metomo, who had this to say.

After this elimination, there are two options: either the coach decides to step down, or the administration sits down, conducts a review, and draws conclusions.A World Cup exit is a major blow for the federation. You know very well that, financially, it's a very, very, very big loss.Marc Brys was tasked with qualifying Cameroon for both the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup. He succeeded in the first challenge, but failed in the main mission—the World Cup, which would have been the most lucrative for the federation. It is now up to the federation to take responsibility, reflect, and decide whether Marc Brys should remain at the helm of the Indomitable Lions, and if he is capable of fulfilling his mandate. Now, there remains a third objective: to win the trophy at the next AFCON, which seems a tall order in the current climate. Marc Brys is under heavy scrutiny, both from his employers and a significant portion of the public, making his mission even more complicated. The environment is not conducive to his growth or the success of the national team. It's not a question of competence—he did manage to qualify the team for AFCON—but rather of an unhealthy environment. The federation, together with the ministry and Marc Brys, must now decide on the next steps: continue his contract, terminate it, or find an amicable agreement.I believe that, given the current situation, it seems difficult for Marc Brys to work in a calm atmosphere. His departure could well benefit the national team.
