Liverpool could find themselves in an almighty scramble for a high-profile centre-back signing next summer.
That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who now claims that Arne Slot’s side WILL be signing a new central defender in 2026.
Having come close to signing Marc Guehi on transfer deadline day, Liverpool went into the season with four options in the position. Then they lost Giovanni Leoni to an ACL tear - and the 18-year-old is not expected back until next season at the earliest.
So Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez are the only centre-backs Slot has currently got available.
But there are short-term doubts over two of those while Van Dijk is into the final two years of his deal.

Konate, 26, is wanted by Real Madrid on a free transfer while there has been talk that the club would entertain the right kind of offer for Gomez.
Nico Schlotterbeck, Ronald Araujo and Jan Paul van Hecke have been discussed as top-quality signings for 2026 but it looks like the Reds will be right there for Konate’s French international teammate - Dayot Upamecano.
Like Konate, Upamecano is out of contract in 2026 - and Bayern Munich will fight hard to keep the 26-year-old stopper.
However, according to Italian transfer market guru Romano, Europe’s top clubs are now on red alert for the Frenchman.
“Several clubs have started being attentive to the opportunity to sign a top center back who is doing fantastic for Bayern recently, like Dayot Upamecano, on a free transfer from 2026,” he tells his YouTube audience.
“There will be several clubs in the market for a defender in the summer. Liverpool will be in the market for a defender in 2026. Probably Paris Saint-Germain might be there as well. Real Madrid can be there as well. Italian clubs too.
“This is not just for Upamecano, for several center backs. And so it’s going to be an interesting situation. Bayern will have the ball in their court. Bayern will have their match point. But now it depends on the financial part.”
