Arsenal are Premier League champions after 22 years of waiting. Attacking Football take a look at the five players that had the biggest impact in their successful campaign.
Mikel Arteta has proved the doubters wrong, guiding Arsenal to a Premier League title. With a potential double on the cards, the Gunners’ season could be one for the history books. An incredible season for the team, but which individuals influenced it the most?
David Raya is proof that you need a top keeper to win the league. The Spaniard was bought for £27 million as competition for Aaron Ramsdale, but soon became Arsenal’s number one. With 19 clean sheets in the 38 games, Raya won the Golden Glove award for the third time. Many would argue that Raya is the Premier League player of the season.
Some of the goalkeeper’s best moments include a brilliant reaction save against Richarlison in the North London derby, an unbelievable point-blank stop against Aston Villa’s John McGinn, and most recently a title-winning save v West Ham as Mateus Fernandes broke clean through, only to be denied by Raya.
Arsenal have been missing many pieces of the puzzle in the last two decades; one more than most has been the one between the sticks. David Raya has been called upon to be Arsenal’s match-winner on a few occasions this season, and has risen to the occasion when asked.
No one can underestimate the power of a great goalkeeper. Yes, Arsenal might be the best defensive setup in Europe; however, David Raya has won them many important points throughout the season.
Outstanding. Declan Rice has been essential to Arsenal’s successful season. The former West Ham man came with a big reputation and a price to match it. This season, he has more than lived up to what Arsenal fans expected.
Big signings don’t always work out, but when they do, it shows why the big money is paid. Rice, who cost Arsenal £105 million, provided leadership and set the example throughout the season. When Arsenal were knocked back, it was Rice there to pick them back up again.
The most memorable moment of the season came when Rice exclaimed, “It’s not done,” following Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to title rivals Manchester City mid-April. A game in which the vast majority concluded that Arsenal had ‘bottled’ the league, the Arsenal midfielder’s rally call proved to be right.
A player who has it all, Declan Rice was the one player who delivered no matter the circumstances. Whether others dropped off or whether he had to change his role in the team, Rice stepped in and stepped up.
A colossal in Arsenal’s defence and a huge problem for the opposition. Gabriel Magalhães has become one of the best defenders in the world and has proven himself once more this season.
The best defensive side in Europe’s top five leagues, conceding just 27 goals in the league and 6 goals in the Champions League. The Brazilian is at the heart of why Arsenal are the hardest team to beat in Europe.
Stand-out games include the defender’s man-of-the-match performance in Arsenal’s huge win away to Newcastle in September and the one-nil win over Brighton in March. Both were defining moments for the Gunners in becoming champions.
Attack wins you games. Defence wins you the league. Arsenal’s centre-back is crucial to what Arsenal and Mikel Arteta have built. Playing 50 matches so far this season, Gabriel’s availability is reflected in Arsenal’s achievements. Without Gabriel, Arsenal’s season may have looked completely different.
Viktor Gyökeres was written off very early in the season. ‘A flop’, they said. ‘Waste of money’, they shouted. Not anymore. Arsenal’s big-money summer signing proved to be vital in Arsenal’s title success.
The Swedish forward has scored 14 goals in the league, 5 in the Champions League, and a couple in the cup competitions. Although many expected more goals, vital goals, and other contributions can not be underestimated.
At £55 million, Gyökeres came with pressure, leading the line for a team and a manager that was in a must-win season. Arsenal’s lack of goal threat and a real no.9 has cost them in previous seasons; the expected reliance on the new striker was immense.
His ability to impact a game without adding his name to the scoresheet hasn’t gone unnoticed. A great first season back in English football with more to come. Now, Arsenal have got over the line, could we see more attacking output next season?
Despite not being as consistent as other players, Eberechi Eze’s impact on Arsenal this season has been immensely felt. After rejecting rivals Tottenham before signing for the Gunners, Eze became immediately a fan favourite.
Following an important goal in Arsenal’s win against former side Crystal Palace, it wasn’t until Eze’s performance in the North London derby against the very team he snubbed that he truly shone. A hat-trick in their biggest game of the season was the best way to make a mark.
Although it wasn’t week in, week out, when Eze performed, he did it when Arsenal needed it the most. Another two goals in the reverse North London derby and a brilliant performance against Newcastle later in the season were crucial moments in the season. Potential slip-ups turned into huge wins thanks to Eze.
Arsenal will go again next season, and with a match-winner like Eberechi Eze in the squad, those title-winning moments are more likely to go in your favour.
