Southampton sit sixth in the Championship, and a play-off berth would leave them three wins from a return to the Premier League. They are unbeaten in 14 under Tonda Eckert.
If promotion comes, here are five things fans might expect and whether Sport Republic learn lessons. According to Sainstmarching.com, summer choices will be pivotal.
First, a clear strategy. After two relegations following directionless windows, sporting director Johannes Spors and the club expect to take a defined plan into the summer, whatever the division. Sunderland and Leeds offered a template with physical, quick recruits.
Second, a big call in the dugout. Spors must decide whether to keep Eckert or hire Premier League experience. At 33 and new to senior management, Eckert looks adaptable in the Championship, but the top flight is another bear pit.
Third, a striker signing. If they go up, Southampton will likely spend another summer chasing the right centre forward. Whatever happens, Damion Downs will likely depart, as will loanee Cyle Larin, so a steadier supply of goals is essential.
Fourth, more VAR flashpoints. Dragan Solak said last June that, in his view, video decisions cost Russell Martin’s side eight points, which might have changed their last campaign. As a promoted minnow, Southampton could face more of the same.
Fifth, a stronger response when the pressure bites. Their previous top-flight season unravelled early and heads dropped by November, but this group appears mentally tougher. Provided there is no calamitous mid-season appointment, standards should not sink as low.
