Sunderland face a significant summer call on Eliezer Mayenda after fresh European interest in the striker.
According to Foot Mercato, Rennes are making a concerted push to sign the 21-year-old, having identified him as an attacking target for this window.
Uncertainty over his future has grown, with the forward understood to be seeking regular minutes after limited starts last season.
Mayenda is under contract until 2030, so Sunderland hold a strong hand and are under no pressure to sell cheaply. Even so, Rennes’ move could provide a path back to French football.
Signed from Sochaux in 2023, he played a key part in promotion, scoring the equaliser in the Championship play-off final against Sheffield United at Wembley. He then netted on his Premier League debut in the opening-day win over West Ham United, before his involvement reduced as the campaign wore on.
Any decision will hinge on valuation, squad planning and the club’s forward options for the new season. Given his age, contract length and potential, Sunderland retain control, but his situation now looks one to monitor.
