Sunderland face a significant summer call on Eliezer Mayenda after fresh European interest. Foot Mercato reports that Stade Rennais are making a strong push to sign the 21-year-old this window.

The Ligue 1 club are said to have identified the striker as a key target as they bolster their attack. It is understood Mayenda is open to leaving for regular football after limited starts last season.

Mayenda is under contract at Sunderland until 2030, which gives the Black Cats a robust negotiating position and removes any need to sell cheaply. A move to Rennes could offer a route back to French football.

He joined from Sochaux in 2023 and played a pivotal role in promotion, scoring the equaliser in the Championship play-off final against Sheffield United at Wembley.

He then marked his Premier League debut with a goal in the opening-day win over West Ham United, though his involvement diminished as the campaign wore on.

Any decision will hinge on valuation, squad planning and Sunderland’s wider attacking options before the new season. Given his age, contract length and potential, the club retain strong control, and Rennes’ interest could now test their stance.
