The 43-year-old's Molineux exit has certainly generated mixed opinions

Wolverhampton Wanderers' pre-season plans had already generated plenty of intrigue, but now the mood surrounding Molineux is one of intense uncertainty and mixed feelings following the dismissal of Rob Edwards.

The Black Country outfit are gearing up for their first campaign as a Championship outfit in eight years, having been relegated as the Premier League's rock-bottom side with a total of just three victories from 38 matches.

Indeed, the club has been on a downward and somewhat unsettled curve in recent times under the ownership of Fosun Group, who were previously celebrated for the fact they had guided the club back to the top-flight in the title-winning campaign under Nuno Espírito Santo, before reaching the FA Cup semi-final and UEFA Europa League quarter-finals in the two immediate seasons afterwards.

Edwards, whose affiliation with the Old Gold and Black has been well-documented at length, returned to WV1 in his latest managerial post in November following Wolves' decision to part ways with current Nottingham Forest boss, Vitor Pereira, after a winless start to the season.

The 43-year-old's move, at the time, was one of controversy given he was only instilled as Middlesbrough head coach 12 months ago, and despite Wolves' perilous position throughout 2025/26, Edwards continued to split opinion.

However, given recent activity, there was an expectancy he would still be tasked with the remit of mounting a first-time promotion bid, until it was confirmed on Thursday that he was sacked, after allegedly only finding out about such eventualities through social media, with Gil Vicente boss, Cesar Peixoto, poised to take the reins.

Unsurprisingly, given Edwards' managerial career so far, some mixed reactions have been generated, and that includes those who offered him a key breakthrough.

Indeed, after spells as a coach, which included periods with Wolves, Edwards' first professional managerial role came with Forest Green Rovers in the summer of 2021.

The Gloucestershire side were, and still remain, heavily ambitious under the stewardship of Dale Vince, and after two instances of play-off semi-final heartbreak in League Two, turned to the Telford native as a highly-rated coach to steer their progression towards League One for the first-ever time.

Edwards was able to live up to such expectations, with the Green Devils securing the fourth tier title on goal difference ahead of Exeter City, with their head coach earning rave reviews as a result.

However, days later, he would make the rather big step up to join Watford, who had just been relegated from the Premier League, with those at The New Lawn rather furious as to how negotiations had been handled by Edwards and the Hornets, stating that a lack of loyalty had been shown by their title-winning boss.

Even though four years have passed, and Edwards has since gone on to manage in the Premier League on two occasions, with the first of those coming after a remarkable play-off triumph at Luton Town in May 2023, those associated with the current National League side didn't take long to fire a dig his way.

Simply, they opted for the viral meme of former Top Gear presenter, Jeremy Clarkson, saying "Oh no! Anyway," which, in itself, has sparked debate.

Edwards' exit means that the expected man in the hotseat, Peixoto, will be Wanderers' sixth boss since Nuno's emotional exit five years ago, and unsurprisingly, it has caused friction amongst the squad.

Earlier this week, Wolves had confirmed the high-profile additions of Kieran Trippier and former Molineux ace and cult hero, Raul Jimenez, on free transfers, with Edwards heavily involved in both deals.

It has been reported that the former England international is one of several players outraged by the decision, which could make for an intriguing start to the campaign.

Naturally, the Midlands side have been tipped for promotion alongside the likes of West Ham United, but now a lack of substance to such claims could be about to follow.
