Kieran Trippier’s move to Wolves takes him back to the division where he first made his name, the Championship.
His career, spanning a Champions League final, a World Cup semi-final and a La Liga title, began with four full seasons in the second tier. He made 174 appearances for Barnsley and Burnley.
He progressed through Manchester City’s academy before joining Burnley in 2012 after Championship loans. “I was playing 46 games a season and there’s nothing better than playing every week. I always believed I could get back to the Premier League.” He told the Telegraph in 2017.
Integral to Burnley’s 2014 promotion, he debuted in the Premier League the following season, then moved to Tottenham for £3.5m after relegation. Kyle Walker’s exit opened the door and Trippier became a regular as Spurs finished third.
That summer he started six times for England at the World Cup, scoring a free-kick to put Gareth Southgate’s side ahead in the semi-final against Croatia.
In 2019 Spurs reached the Champions League final, losing 2-0 to Liverpool in Madrid. He then joined Atletico Madrid for £20m, made 83 appearances across two and a half seasons and won La Liga in 2021, before a £12m return to Newcastle in January 2022.
The first signing of Eddie Howe’s tenure, he helped Newcastle to fourth place and a Champions League return. He created Dan Burn’s opener in the 2025 League Cup final win over Liverpool, and Howe has since praised his consistency, leadership and will to win.
