The first round of Frauen-Bundesliga games were played over the course of four days. Eintracht Frankfurt and champions Bayern had winning starts, while the three promoted teams avoided defeat.

Record-breaking day

57,762. That’s the new Bundesliga attendance record set at the Allianz Arena when Bayern started their season with a 2-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. The previous record was only 38,365, which was set in Köln three years ago.

Last season’s surprise package held the champions until the final 15 minutes. However, Vanessa Gilles and Klara Bühl scored in the space of two minutes to give Bayern the three points. The Spaniard coach José Barcala started his Bayern reign with a Supercup win in Karlsruhe the previous week.

Five-star Frankfurt

Ahead of their first-leg tie against Real Madrid in the Champions League qualifiers, Niko Arnautis’ side started their league campaign in style. Eintracht Frankfurt’s long-serving coach saw his team overcome SGS Essen 5-0 at Stadion am Brentanobad.

Nicole Anyomi, who didn’t make Germany’s squad in the Euros, had the privilege of scoring the first goal of the Frauen-Bundesliga. Like Anyomi, Géraldine Reuteler was one of the three players to reach double-digit league goals for Frankfurt last season, and she scored either side of the half-time break in a confident showing for the hosts.

Frankfurt will host Real Madrid tomorrow before the return leg in Madrid next week for a place in the league phase of the Champions League. 18 teams will compete in the revamped format of UEFA’s competition this season.

Solid start for promoted teams

Similarly, the Frauen-Bundesliga have 14 teams for the first time in its 36-year history. Turbine Potsdam were the only relegated club last season, while three teams got promoted from 2. Bundesliga.

Two of them face each other on Sunday in front of a huge crowd at Stadion An der Alten Försterei. Union Berlin even had a remarkable atmosphere in 2. Bundesliga last season, and their Bundesliga baptism saw them face a team they finished with equal points last season.

There was no separating of the two sides once again, but Union left ruing a missed chance as Selma Licina’s 90th-minute debut goal secured a draw for Nürnberg. Last season’s 2. Bundesliga top-scorer Lisa Heiseler netted Union’s first Bundesliga goal.

The women’s team of Hamburger SV also played its first Bundesliga game at Volksparkstadion against Wolfsburg. The seven-time Bundesliga champions entered the final ten minutes leading 3-1, but HSV salvaged a point in a stunning fashion in the 97th minute.

Wins for Hoffenheim and Leipzig

Werder Bremen sensationally reached the final of the DFB-Pokal last season, but they started this term with an uninspiring draw at home to SC Freiburg. Iceland international Ingibjörg Sigurðardóttir had a debut to forget for the visitors as she was sent off in the action that resulted in Bremen’s equalizing goal from 12 yards.

Elsewhere, Leipzig and Hoffenheim won away from home. Marleen Schimmer scored and assisted the other goal for Leipzig in the 2-0 win against her former club Köln. The first matchday action closed on Monday with TSG Hoffenheim beating Carl Zeiss Jena 4-1. Selina Cerci and Melissa Kössler shared the goals for Hoffenheim.
