Barcelona’s midfield maestro Frenkie de Jong is finally set to formalise his future with the club by signing a four-year contract extension until June 30, 2029, according to Mundo Deportivo.
A formal announcement is expected as early as tomorrow, with all necessary parties having given green light to the contract terms.
While de Jong will continue to receive his current salary for the remainder of this season, the revised wages will take effect starting July 1, 2026.
Significantly, the renewal also includes a considerable rise in his release clause—from 400 million euros to a towering 500 million euros.
Arriving with high expectations after a stellar breakthrough season in the Eredivisie and impressive performances in the Champions League with Ajax, de Jong hit the ground running with Barcelona.
Since then, he has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world, renowned for his vision, ball control and ability to dictate the tempo of the game.
Despite turbulent times for Barcelona in recent years, including financial struggles and managerial changes, the Dutchman has remained a consistent performer.
Often operating in the double pivot alongside Pedri, de Jong’s versatility enables him to excel in both deep-lying playmaker and box-to-box midfielder roles.
Fresh from featuring in the Netherlands’ 4-0 World Cup qualifying victories over Malta and Finland, de Jong will be aiming to help Barcelona return to winning ways in Saturday’s clash against Girona.
The Spanish champions suffered defeats against Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla just before the international break, but have the opportunity to reclaim top spot in the La Liga table before Real Madrid visit Getafe on Sunday.
