Norwich City’s Josh Sargent has turned down the chance to move to Wolfsburg, although it’s still expected that he will leave Carrow Road this summer.

The USA international has been a key player for the Canaries over the past few years, and he enjoyed a prolific Championship campaign last time out, scoring 15 goals and registering five assists in 32 games.

However, with Norwich failing to win promotion, a summer move always seemed on the cards, and, after plenty of speculation, it had been reported that Wolfsburg had agreed a deal worth up to £21m for Sargent.

Therefore, it was expected that the move would go through this week, but the Pink’Un have confirmed that Sargent has opted against joining the Bundesliga outfit after spending the past 48 hours weighing up whether to return to Germany.

Whilst it appears nothing else is imminent, the report adds that there is plenty of interest in Sargent, with Leeds United and Burnley having monitored the 25-year-old in the past, whilst it has been suggested there are clubs in Italy keeping tabs on the striker.

So, there is still an expectation that Sargent will leave Norwich, but he continues to train with Liam Manning’s group, and he played in the draw with Waregem over the weekend.

Of course, it would be brilliant for Norwich if they could retain Sargent for another season, but the reality is that he is highly likely to depart, and he will have turned down Wolfsburg as he feels another offer will be forthcoming.

Manning and the recruitment team will be aware of that, and they will still be working on potential targets to replace the ex-Werder Bremen man, as he will need replacing, even with Mathias Kvistgaarden already through the door.

The Wolfsburg deal means clubs know what Norwich will accept, and an overall package worth around £20m seems very fair considering his ability.

Now, it’s a case of waiting for those interested clubs to make their move, and it would still be no surprise if Sargent sorted a swift exit, so the club will be prepared for all scenarios.

In the meantime, Norwich will be working on how they can help Manning, so it will be interesting to see what the XI looks like for their Championship opener at home to Millwall on August 9.
