The Foxes' fall into the third tier was confirmed on Tuesday night

Leicester City's recent downfall has been well-documented, and for many Foxes fans, the confirmation of the club's relegation to League One for just the second time ever was the final nail in the coffin.

Just 10 years ago, the Foxes had lifted the Premier League title under Claudio Ranieri and were gearing up towards multiple historic UEFA Champions League nights at the King Power Stadium.

However, they are now preparing for a first season at third tier level for 17 years, after a campaign full of woes both on the pitch and in the boardroom.

Relegation to League One seemed rubber-stamped for the East Midlands outfit after they were downed 1-0 by Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Saturday lunchtime, but it was confirmed on Tuesday night with a 2-2 draw against play-off hopefuls, Hull City.

To their credit on the night, Rowett's side showed a strong desire and will to turn the game around in the second period following a comical error from Asmir Begovic to hand Liam Millar the Tigers' opener, with Jordan James scoring his 11th goal of a fine individual season, before Luke Thomas scored a second in two minutes.

However, Leicester were denied the opportunity to take their battle against the drop to the final two matches of the Championship season through Oli McBurnie's 63rd-minute strike, with the full-time whistle met by a chorus of boos and shouts of frustration towards the players and hierarchy from the home crowd.

The club's financial situation has also been well-documented, with a six-point deduction also not helping Leicester's cause, albeit they have now won just two of their last 20 league matches, with Rowett overseeing one of those against Bristol City.

And with the Foxes' fate now sealed, a fresh update on their managerial situation has been delivered.

Rowett, of course, was handed his current role on a short-term basis in February until the end of the season, having undergone a similar role at Birmingham City two years ago, which also ended with the West Midlands side relegated.

As previously mentioned, the former Leicester defender has only been able to oversee one victory in his 12-game tenure thus far against the Robins, which was also the club's first and only clean sheet since September 20th in the Championship.

Naturally, it has been a hot topic of discussion as to who will be the next permanent manager or head coach in the hotseat at the East Midlands club, with Andy King preceding Rowett in the dugout for a short period after Marti Cifuentes was sacked in January after just six months in charge.

As such, Leicester will now be looking for their fourth permanent manager in the space of 12 months after they initially fell out of the Premier League, with talkSPORT's Jason Bourne reporting that Rowett is expected to see out the final two matches of the campaign against Millwall and Blackburn Rovers before departing.

Alex Crook, has also stated that he expects an official announcement from the club regarding their latest managerial move to be made in July, which would give the hierarchy a two-month period to conduct a search ahead of the League One season, which gets underway on the weekend of August 15th.

Gary Rowett's response to speculation over his Leicester City future

When asked about what type of decisions need to be made by those in power at the club, Rowett's response of “(that's) not for me to worry about," only added to the feeling that he may not be the man to lead Leicester into a critical season of rebuilding.

Given the financial uncertainty which surrounds the club, it remains to be seen which avenue they take with a new appointment, with it also expected that several high earners are to depart in the summer, with Abdul Fatawu, in particular, still the subject of intense transfer interest despite the Foxes' relegation.

Supporters also stayed outside the main reception at the King Power Stadium post-match to vent their anger at players and staff, and a similar atmosphere could be in the offing when Leicester host Millwall on Friday night.
