Leeds United’s break produced winners and losers, with Gabriel Gudmundsson outstanding and Wales’ quartet suffering. According to Leeds Live, 12 senior players were away.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin earned his first England cap in five years with a second-half cameo in Friday’s 1-1 draw with Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay, missing a free header. He then left the camp, as pre-scheduled by Thomas Tuchel, and his World Cup hopes remain uncertain.
Gudmundsson helped Sweden qualify for the World Cup. After an injury scare in the play-off semi-final against Ukraine, he played all 90 minutes as Sweden beat Poland 3-2 in the final.
Anton Stach returned for Germany, playing 10 minutes across two games and making his first appearance since 2022 in a 4-3 win over Switzerland. Unused against Ghana, his inclusion remains in the balance.
Noah Okafor received a late Switzerland call, ending a 16-month exile. He did not feature against Germany and left as a precaution, but Murat Yakin spoke positively, keeping selection possible.
Wales’ Karl Darlow, Joe Rodon, Ethan Ampadu and Daniel James lost a World Cup semi-final to Bosnia on penalties. James opened the scoring, Darlow made a fine save and Ampadu captained, before Edin Dzeko equalised. Darlow saved one in the shoot-out, but team-mates missed.
Brenden Aaronson played 11 minutes against Portugal after sitting out versus Belgium, having started against Paraguay in November, so he may still need to lock down his place.
Joel Piroe debuted for Suriname in a 2-1 play-off semi-final loss to Bolivia, missing a one-on-one.
