Galatasaray are preparing a compensation claim after Noa Lang suffered a severe finger injury in their 4-0 Champions League defeat at Liverpool. The winger gashed his right hand on an advertising hoarding at Anfield and the club plan to pursue damages via UEFA.
The incident came in the 76th minute, when the 26-year-old collided with the boards, received oxygen and left on a stretcher, consoled by Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk. UEFA confirmed they are reviewing the pitch-side set-up, including LED boards, and wished Lang a swift recovery.
Lang underwent surgery to save the damaged digit and later told supporters on social media that the operation went well.
Galatasaray lodged a complaint with UEFA after the match and are consulting lawyers, with a compensation filing planned that seeks to cover the player’s wages during his absence, which the club argue stems from a preventable stadium hazard.
Anfield staff inspected the area after the game, although it remains unclear whether the hoarding was unsafe or the collision was an unfortunate accident.
The injury overshadowed a dominant night for the hosts, as Dominik Szoboszlai, Hugo Ekitike, Ryan Gravenberch and Mo Salah scored, the latter having missed a penalty earlier. Liverpool will face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals after the French side thumped Chelsea.
