Former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil issued a warning to Ruben Amorim over his Manchester United future after Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford.
The Red Devils were stunned at the Gtech Community Stadium when Igor Thiago scored twice inside the opening 20 minutes.
Benjamin Sesko halved the deficit with his first goal since joining United from RB Leipzig in a £74 million move.
Bruno Fernandes had a golden opportunity to level the scores in the second half when Nathan Collins dragged Bryan Mbeumo back inside the area.
However, the 31-year-old’s tame effort was saved by Caoimhin Kelleher.
Mathias Jensen wrapped up the win for Brentford with a brilliant goal from outside the box deep in stoppage time.
O’Neil, who previously managed Bournemouth and Wolves, has warned that Amorim could be in trouble if United fail to win their next home fixture against Sunderland next weekend.
He told Sky Sports: “I suppose it is a natural time for clubs to look to make changes. I love to see managers given time – as you know, I am biased.
“I am a manager, so I want them all to be given time and to be allowed to show how good they are. But international breaks do tend to, we do tend to see more changes.
“Let’s make no bones about it, Sunderland at home, newly promoted side, when you are Manchester United, with the run they are on, it is going to be a must-win for them. It is a big game.”
United’s hierarchy backed Amorim in the summer transfer window, making funds available for the signings of Matheus Cunha, Mbeumo, Sesko and Senne Lammens.
The team has picked up just seven points from six Premier League matches and are 14th in the table.
Amorim’s side were unconvincing against Chelsea last weekend but secured maximum points from the home clash after goals from Fernandes and Casemiro.
United should have built on that result, but they fell to a humiliating loss at Brentford. If they fail to beat Sunderland, Amorim’s time at the club could be over.
