Serie A will have a third coaching chance during the November international break after Roma and Lecce, although with a one-week delay. Genoa decided out of the blue to sack Alberto Gilardino and appoint Patrick Vieira, as first reported by Matteo Moretto. The announcements will come on Wednesday, Gianluca Di Marzio relays.
The Grifone sit in 17th position, one point above the relegation zone. They recently gained momentum by beating Parma and snatching a last-gasp draw with Como to atone for a woeful start. They have logged two wins, four draws, and six losses.
Gilardino was deemed to be safe by the Italian officials a few times, also because the controlling group 777 Partners is going through a financial crisis, but that turned out not to be the case, and the foreign portion of the brass made the call to bring in Vieira.
The former striker had been at the helm since 2022, leading them to the promotion and a comfortable campaign in 2023/2024. According to Alfredo Pedullà, he also paid the price for some divergences on the transfer market.
The ex-midfielder last coached Nice, Crystal Palace, and Strasbourg, obtaining his best results in France. He has been fired mid-season twice.
The premises to pull the plug were there more in previous rounds than after the last two, where they showed more fight and organization. The timing is very strange, as they could have given the new gaffer more time to get acclimated. He has some playing experience in Serie A, but it’s a risky choice. Still, they have a lot of room for improvement thanks to several upcoming returns from injury.
