Sixteen teams remain as the World Cup last 16 start on Saturday, and groups E and F have no survivors.

According to L'Équipe, only one third-placed side has reached this stage, Paraguay, while two group winners are already out, Germany and the Netherlands.

From group E, Ecuador, who advanced as the best third, lost 2-0 in Mexico. Ivory Coast, the runners-up, were beaten by Norway 2-1. Germany also exited at this round.

Group F followed suit. Japan were defeated by Brazil 2-1 and Sweden lost to France 3-0. Brazil’s group C also sent Morocco through, with no third-placed reprieve.

From group I, France and Norway reached the last 16, but Senegal fell to Belgium 3-2 after extra time. In Belgium’s group G, neither side that made the last 32 won inside 90 minutes.

Egypt matched Belgium by advancing on penalties against Australia, 1-1, 4-2 on pens. Four groups have just one team left, group A Mexico, group H Spain, group J Argentina and group L England.
