Germany rounded off their World Cup preparations with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the United States in Chicago, overcoming a spirited display from the hosts in the final friendly for both sides before the tournament gets underway.
The four-time world champions made the perfect start and took the lead inside the opening stages. After Nmecha won a free-kick in midfield, Joshua Kimmich delivered an excellent ball into the area and Kai Havertz rose unmarked to head past Matt Freese, netting his 22nd international goal.
However, the USA responded well and gradually grew into the contest. Their efforts were rewarded eight minutes before half-time when Antonee Robinson produced a moment of real quality. Following a partially-cleared corner, the defender met the loose ball on the edge of the box and hammered a superb first-time volley beyond Oliver Baumann to level the scores.
The Americans started the second half brightly, but Germany regained control and restored their advantage in the 57th minute. Havertz turned provider this time, collecting the ball in the area before laying it off perfectly for Leroy Sané, who made no mistake with the finish.
The goal took some of the momentum away from the hosts, and chances became increasingly limited as both managers made a series of substitutions. Leon Goretzka came close to adding a third for Germany, while Brenden Aaronson forced a fine late save from Baumann.
Germany now head into their World Cup opener against Curaçao full of confidence, while the USA will turn their attention to Group D rivals Paraguay.
