Anthony Gordon continued his strong Champions League form as Newcastle United claimed a convincing 3-0 win over PSV Eindhoven at St James’ Park.
The England international scored the Magpies’ second goal just before the half-hour mark, tapping in after a defensive error to move Newcastle into firm control.
The strike took Gordon to six goals in this season’s competition, equalling Alan Shearer’s club record for most goals by a Newcastle player in a single Champions League campaign.
Yoane Wissa had earlier opened the scoring after eight minutes with his first-ever Champions League goal, before turning provider for Gordon as PSV were punished again for sloppy play at the back.
With six goals and two assists from seven appearances, Gordon has now registered eight goal contributions in the competition this season - a new Newcastle record. Shearer previously held the mark with seven during the 2002/03 campaign.
While Gordon has not scored from open play in the Premier League for over a year, he has been decisive in Europe. Harvey Barnes added a third after the break to take his tally to 12 goals for the season.
Gordon and Barnes have also become just the third pair of English teammates to score five or more goals in the same Champions League campaign, following Leeds United duo Lee Bowyer and Alan Smith, and Manchester United pair Paul Scholes and Teddy Sheringham in the 2000/01 season.
