‘We created absolutely nothing’: Peter Bosz disappointed after Champions League defeat to Newcastle United

It wasn’t the result that PSV wanted in the Champions League when they travelled to Newcastle United on Wednesday evening. The Eredivisie side ended up on the wrong end of a 3-0 score line. However, while Peter Bosz acknowledged that his side deserved to lose, he did give the team some praise for how they played and approached the game. As reported by ESPN, the PSV head coach said ‘We put them under pressure in their own half with a lot of energy and intensity. That inspires confidence‘.

However, Bosz loves attacking football, and he more than anyone knows that a good performance does not count for much if you can’t create chances and score goals. The PSV head coach went on to say ‘We created absolutely nothing…if you make the mistakes we made, winning becomes very difficult’. Bosz also felt that Newcastle United, despite the score line, failed to create much either. That was what caused frustration amongst the PSV players and management after the match, as they felt there was something to be gained from St James Park.

The stats certainly reflected the PSV performance. The side managed 46% possession, an admirable number against their Premier League opponents. However, Newcastle United finished with an xG of 2.4 from 11 shots, while PSV had an xG of 0.34 from six shots. That surely must be one of their lowest xG numbers since Bosz became head coach.

PSV still occupy one of the qualifying spots for the next round of the Champions League. The Dutch champions are 22nd in the league table with eight points, yet they face Bayern Munich in the final match of the league phase. Bayern beat Union St Gilloise and are guaranteed of a top eight finish, so PSV will hope their level will drop off for the final match.

Newcastle United on the other hand are seventh, and a win over PSG would guarantee their spot in the top eight. Even a draw might be enough, depending on results elsewhere. Newcastle United are level on points with the Parisians so it is all to play for between the two in the final round of matches.
