Grêmio left the international break with a spate of fitness issues, five players sidelined and Amuzu short of full fitness in Thursday’s 2-1 defeat to Palmeiras. According to Globo.com, vice-president Antônio Dutra Junior outlined the problems after the match, and coach Luís Castro explained that the different workload in a pause can expose less used muscle groups, but training cannot simply stop.
Those affected include Leo Pérez, diagnosed with a grade-one injury to his right adductor and officially confirmed on Wednesday, with a return estimated from mid-April. William, Arthur and André Henrique are also dealing with muscular discomfort.
The squad will be reassessed before facing Remo on Sunday. Among those with muscular discomfort, Arthur has been out the longest, missing training throughout the break, and the expectation is for a Sunday return.
Also on the list are Balbuena, who returned from the window with pain and is undergoing tests, and Amuzu, who has muscular discomfort. Marlon has a fractured left foot, Villasanti is recovering from a left knee ligament injury and João Pedro has a left thigh muscle injury.
Players are typically accustomed to competing every two or three days, which changes during pauses when workloads shift. This presents additional risk of minor issues for some.
