Grêmio were knocked out of the Sul-Americana after a 1-0 home defeat to Bolívar on Thursday night, with the Arena crowd turning on head coach Luís Castro and chanting for club idol Renato Portaluppi.
According to Globo.com, the club will not make changes following the exit, and Castro held his post-match news conference as usual after a brief dressing-room meeting.
Discontent was evident from the start. Supporters booed when the line-up was read out, then insulted the coach during the game and at full time. The team and staff were also booed throughout the defeat.
Chants for Renato were heard during and after the match. The Grêmio idol is without a club after leaving Vasco during the Brasileirão pause, and his last spell at Grêmio ended at the end of 2024.
Castro said referring to Renato means talking about a Grêmio idol, and that it is natural for such a figure to be saluted and present in supporters’ minds. He added that he does not live with ghosts, focuses on his players and his conscience, and offered only congratulations to Renato for what he has done at Grêmio.
