According to Glorioso 1904, Pep Guardiola reacted to Benfica’s historic win over Real Madrid and said he would send a message of thanks to José Mourinho. He was speaking after his side’s match.
Asked in his press conference about his former rival from their time in Spain, he indicated he would send that message. He also offered words of appreciation to Benfica.
Guardiola said they did not realise Benfica needed one more goal to qualify, admitting he was unaware of the criteria for the Portuguese club to advance.
He recalled seeing the goalkeeper move forward and wondering why, concerned Real Madrid might equalise and that they would be out as a result. He said he was taken aback by Trubin’s goal.
He added that it felt like a good piece of strategy from José Mourinho, scoring a fourth. Benfica are scheduled to face Real Madrid in the Champions League play-off on 17 and 25 February, first at Estádio da Luz then at the Santiago Bernabéu.
