Ipswich Town finally broke their East Anglian derby duck with a victory over Norwich City
Ipswich Town bested Norwich City 3-1 in the East Anglian Derby this past weekend, ending a 16-year drought against their bitter rivals.
The Tractor Boys finally look to have found some momentum after struggling during the opening stages of the season, when they failed to win once in their first four encounters.
Kieran McKenna’s side arrived back in the second-tier with expectations sky-high, as the quality of their squad far exceeded most outfits in the division.
After their tricky start, Ipswich battered Sheffield United 5-0, which appeared to be a turning point for their fortunes. However, they only escaped defeat in their next match against Blackburn Rovers due to a waterlogged pitch, forcing the contest to be abandoned.
Four points from their clashes with Bristol City and Portsmouth set Ipswich up nicely for derby day, where they were the dominant force from minute one. Norwich never really looked like competing for the win and the Tractor Boys seized the opportunity in front of them.
Quality provided by Jaden Philogene and Jack Clarke highlighted just how much of a threat McKenna’s side can be when they are playing well, further boosting their credentials of getting back into the automatic promotion mix.
Ipswich’s triumph over Norwich was made more significant because it was the first time they’d bested their rival in the league for 16 years. Paying tribute to this achievement, defender Harry Clarke took to social media in his own fashion to rub it in just a little bit more.
The Tractor Boys’ victory over Norwich has come at an important time in the season and gives them further impetus to push up the table.
Ipswich sit ninth in the Championship standings after playing eight matches and have a game in hand on all those above due to their encounter with Blackburn being abandoned.
Town defender Clarke - who was missing from the match as he is still recovering from a knee issue - is a local lad having been born and bred in Ipswich, clearly realised how significant the derby day triumph was, and decided to share his passion via social media.
Reposting a picture onto his Instagram story of Ipswich celebrating the win, Clarke wrote a caption that stated: “Shove your 16 years up…”
The 24-year-old clearly references how long the Suffolk side have gone without a victory over Norwich and doesn’t hold back in boasting about finally breaking their duck.
Ipswich also shared a video of Clarke celebrating in-front of the Sir Bobby Robson Stand at full-time, in what were jubilant scenes for all involved with the blue half of East Anglia.
Ipswich entered the 2025/26 Championship campaign tipped as one of the favourites to fight for promotion, but it had been a bit of a slow start to life back in the second tier.
The Tractor Boys enjoy a wealth of talented operators, who when working in unison, will prove too competitive for any side in the division.
After struggling to start, it finally looks like McKenna’s side are living up to their promise and are already back in the play-off hunt, with a game in-hand too thanks to the abandonment of their contest with Blackburn Rovers last month.
The Suffolk side sit six points behind league leaders Coventry City and with 38 matches left to play, they have plenty of time to make up that deficit - it would be difficult to bet against them being in that conversation come May.
