Marcelino Nunez earned the ire of Norwich City fans with his post-match celebrations for Ipswich Town in their 3-1 win over their bitter rivals on Sunday.

The Chile international was filmed celebrating in front of the home fans, picking up the Ipswich-branded corner flag after his first East Anglian derby for the Tractor Boys.

The midfielder made the switch from Carrow Road to Portman Road late in the summer transfer window in a deal worth a reported £10 million.

The 25-year-old came off the bench, with goals from Cédric Kipré, Jaden Philogene and Jack Clarke sealing an important three points for Kieran McKenna’s side.

He was the first player to make this move between the two clubs since Andy Marshall’s deal in 2001.

No malice behind Marcelino Nunez’s Ipswich celebrations

When asked if Nunez was disrespectful in his celebrations, FLW’s Norwich fan pundit Zeke Downes claimed that he was, but that there was no malice behind them.

He believes that the midfielder simply doesn’t understand the significance of the derby to fans of both clubs, and that he doesn’t have any loyalty.

“I mean, yes, they were disrespectful, but the whole thing from him has been,” Downes told Football League World.

“But I honestly don’t think he’s doing it with any malice.

“I don’t want to be too rude, but I don’t think he understands the whole thing.

“I think he doesn’t quite really know what moving from Norwich to Ipswich means, and he just doesn’t have any loyalty.

“It’s not ideal, but if that’s what he wants, then that’s what he wants.

“He had been told by people at the club and players that it’s not something that you should do, but he decided to do it anyway and if he thinks that moving to Ipswich is something that will improve his career then I guess fair enough.

“You do you.

“But yeah, the celebration’s a little bit stupid, but also I don’t really care.”

Pressure on Liam Manning grows

Liam Manning will now go into the October international break under increasing pressure after this latest defeat.

The Canaries finished 13th in the table last year, and were hoping the appointment of the ex-Bristol City coach could help turn things around.

However, the Norfolk outfit are now 19th in the Championship following this defeat to their bitter rivals, five points behind Ipswich in ninth.

Next up for Norwich is a home clash against the Robins on 18 October in a 3pm kick-off.

Marcelino Nunez leaned into his role as the villain

By making the move to Ipswich from Norwich, he was never likely to get a good reception from the away fans.

Now he has guaranteed that he will receive the wrath of the home fans when he next plays in Carrow Road with these post-match celebrations.

That is part of football in many ways, and he has leaned into this villain role by having some fun with the Ipswich fans after the game.
