Harry Wilson’s switch to Leeds has been described as a sideways step by former Fulham boss Rene Meulensteen, despite the winger’s 10 goals and seven assists in 36 Premier League games last season.

“Harry Wilson will probably have a better contract at Leeds than he had at Fulham. Something about the move must have triggered his interest, although he might have been hoping for a team in Europe when he was playing so well last season.” Meulensteen was speaking to Andy’s Bet Club.

“It is a bit of a sideways step. He is a player who can make a difference and will definitely help Leeds. He must be happy with the move to sign such a long contract.”

Leeds tried to sign Wilson on deadline day last summer and finally landed him 10 months later. The Welshman agreed a four-year deal, flew to the USA with Daniel Farke’s squad and could face Wrexham this weekend.

Wilson has said Leeds’ prior interest, along with the influence of Welsh teammates including Ethan Ampadu, helped shape his decision.

Leeds meet the Championship club in the early hours of Sunday UK time, then play Sunderland and Liverpool. RB Leipzig, Manchester United and FC Augsburg follow before a Premier League opener at Nottingham Forest on Saturday August 22.
