Brazil face Scotland at 19:00 Brasília time in the iconic yellow, a strip Corinthians helped christen more than 70 years ago. The change followed the Maracanazo pain of 1950.
In 1953 an open contest chose Aldyr Garcia Schlee’s design, yellow with green trim, blue shorts and white socks. “Men’s clothing was very sober then, and the yellow shirt made a strong impact,” he said in 2002, in an interview later reproduced by O Globo in 2022.
On 28 February 1954, Brazil began World Cup qualifying in Santiago. Baltazar, Corinthians’ Cabecinha de Ouro and the club’s second-highest scorer, hit two against Chile, cementing the Amarelinha as the national kit.
At the 1954 finals, Cabeção and Baltazar were called. The striker scored in a 5-0 win over Mexico, with Didi, Julinho and Pinga, twice, also scoring. A 1-1 draw with Yugoslavia sent both through.
Brazil then lost 4-2 to Hungary in the Battle of Berne, a stormy tie with three dismissals and post-match fighting. Baltazar, nursing a knock, started on the bench. Hungary led 2-0 early, Djalma Santos and Julinho replied, but elimination followed.
Schlee later feared the yellow would be scrapped, yet it underpinned titles in 1958, 1962 and 1970, then 1994 and 2002. Brazil top Group C with four points and meet Scotland in Miami under Carlo Ancelotti, without a Corinthians player.
