Football League World looks at Frank Lampard's stance on potentially Coventry City for a return to the Premier League with West Ham

Coventry City will intend on going all the way and achieving promotion back to the Premier League this season, having agonisingly lost out to Sunderland in the play-off semi-finals back in May after a blistering charge into the top-six under Frank Lampard.

The Sky Blues were rightfully billed among the promotion favourites heading into the current campaign, which they have started in strong fashion by remaining undefeated from their opening five matches.

Coventry are in and around the top-six once again and you do get the feeling that the best is perhaps still yet to come from Lampard's side, who would benefit from converting more draws into victory but enjoyed a rapid upturn in form and fortunes following the appointment of the ex-Derby County and Chelsea boss last November.

Siutated in 17th place at the time in which he assumed the reigns from long-serving former manager Mark Robins, Lampard took Coventry all the way to the play-offs and it's hard to ignore that the outcome of the Sky Blues' season could depend on whether the 47-year-old stays put for the full duration.

That has been called into question amid recent links to the job at West Ham, which could soon be vacant as significant pressure continues to surround the future of Graham Potter following an abject start to the season.

A report from Football Insider earlier this month disclosed how the Hammers have sounded out Lampard for the job with the club where his illustrious playing career started, but, perhaps more significantly, it has revealed the Chelsea and England icon's personal stance on a potential return to East London.

Lampard's stance is yet to be completely determined, but there is a suggestion that he could be open to leaving Coventry for West Ham.

The ex-midfield superstar is said to be content with staying put and helping Coventry compete for promotion, which would make sense considering that he's just getting the ball rolling on his first full season in the West Midlands.

However, following mixed previous reigns with both Chelsea and Everton, the report adds that Lampard is believed to be "ambitious and eager" to return to the Premier League at the right time, evidently keen to right his wrongs and make a name for himself as a top-flight head coach.

Just what the right time would look like for Lampard, of course, remains the mystery.

Coventry supporters will naturally hope the right time is once he takes the Sky Blues up, but the opportunity to make himself a hero at West Ham - this time in the dugout instead of on the pitch - would naturally be an appealing one and he has earned the right to have another go at cracking the Premier League.

Coventry City need to keep Frank Lampard at all costs amid West Ham interest

Coventry managed to retain prized assets such as Milan van Ewijk, Jack Rudoni and Haji Wright during the summer transfer window and now, they face a fresh challenge in keeping their most important asset to date exactly where he is.

The transformative upwards impact Lampard's appointment had on Coventry's season last year, while not quite resulting in promotion, was mesmeric, and the promotion hopefuls have every right to be optimistic about what can be achieved across a full season under his stewardship.

Lampard has resurrected his reputation since dropping back down to the Championship with Coventry and it would not be a surprise to see him managing in the Premier League once again before long. The Sky Blues now need to do everything in their power to make sure that's at the CBS Arena and not elsewhere.
