The defender was a key part of the first team squad at Portman Road as they rose from League One to the Premier League under Kieran McKenna.

However, his game time was reduced in the top flight, with the centre-back featuring just 15 times for the Tractor Boys as they suffered relegation with a 19th place finish.

This led to him making the switch to Frank Lampard’s side in August, with the Sky Blues looking to add defensive reinforcement and experience to their squad.

Here we use estimated figures from Capology to compare Woolfenden’s wages at Coventry to what he was earning at Ipswich prior to his move…

It was reported that Woolfenden’s deal cost in the region of £4 million for Coventry, who are aiming for promotion to the Premier League this season.

The defender was one of just three permanent additions at the CBS Arena over the summer, with Miguel Ángel Brau and Kaine Kesler-Hayden also joining, along with the arrival of Carl Rushworth on loan.

As a result of his move, the 26-year-old has agreed a three-year contract that will keep him at Coventry until the summer of 2028.

Woolfenden has been rewarded with a salary equivalent to the top earners at the club, with the player receiving £25,000 per week.

Three of his teammates also earn that figure, which includes Ellis Simms, Matt Grimes and Haji Wright.

Only one other player earns £20,000 per week or more, and that is summer signing Kesler-Hayden, who arrived from Aston Villa.

The total weekly payroll at Coventry is currently £249,000 per week, which is the 20th highest in the entire Championship.

In comparison, Ipswich have the third highest weekly payroll in the division, with the Tractor Boys paying their squad a total of £551,500 per week following their relegation from the Premier League.

Woolfenden came through the academy system at Ipswich to cement himself as a crucial part of their promotion successes under McKenna.

The defender featured 82 times across the 2022/23 and 2023/24 campaigns, with the team finishing second in the table in consecutive years to go from League One to the top flight.

During this time, the centre-back’s salary with the Tractor Boys saw him earn £12,500 per week from the Suffolk outfit.

This means he has doubled his wages by making the move from Portman Road to the CBS Arena, where he could also feature more prominently in Lampard’s plans.

In terms of permanent members of the Ipswich first team squad, Woolfenden’s salary was much smaller than Dara O’Shea, who currently receives £35,000 per week as their best paid player.

Summer arrivals Ashley Young and Azor Matusiwa, along with Ben Johnson, are the next highest paid players in McKenna’s squad, with the trio all earning £30,000-a-week.
