Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen has reacted to news the club are set to be served with a winding-up petition.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen insists he is trying to focus on football after it was revealed the club will be issued with a winding-up petition.
The Owls’ financial problems under Dejphon Chansiri have been well-documented, with the owner failing to pay wages on time in five of the previous seven months.
That has brought many EFL sanctions already, with Wednesday expected to be deducted points in the future for those financial breaches.
However, the problems don’t end there for Wednesday, and it was claimed today that the club will ‘imminently’ be served with a winding-up petition over money owed to HMRC, which is believed to be around £1m.
That would increase the pressure on Chansiri to sell the club, which is perhaps the one positive to take, although it puts the club on the road to administration. So, it’s a very bleak outlook for Wednesday right now.
As you would expect, Pedersen was quizzed about this development, but the boss explained to the BBC that he only concentrates on what he can control, as he also confirmed that the off-field talk doesn’t have a negative impact on the players.
“I heard about it, and, of course, it’s not good, but let’s see what happens before I say something about this. I have been in contact (with Chansiri), but we have not spoken about this," Pedersen said.
“It’s a lot, but I can’t say we’re used to it,but it has been like this for a very long time, so we are well trained and focused on what we can control.
"And, again, today, I have not heard anything negative in the dressing room. There has been a great atmosphere with the players, they had a good training (session), and they have seen their national team players who came back. There were a lot of happy players in this case.
“There has been a lot going on, but our boys and staff do really well to put things away, because at the end of the day we have no control on those things.”
This is a difficult position for the head coach to be put in, and Pedersen will surely have answered more non-football questions than any other manager in the past few months!
As he says, he can’t control the situation, and whilst he will have major concerns about the future of the club, the reality is that he has a job to try and prepare the team for tough Championship games.
Therefore, he is right to focus on that, and ultimately, whatever he does say won’t change the situation, as the Owls’ struggles are down to Chansiri.
In the bigger picture, Sheffield Wednesday won’t be able to progress until Chansiri has moved on, and the winding-up petition was another reminder that this must happen as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, Pedersen and the players have handled themselves very well in these difficult circumstances, and they will be giving their all to get more points on the boards when they face Charlton at The Valley on Saturday.
