FC Barcelona have already had quite the interesting summer transfer window. Despite initially hoping that they would have secured some major signings by now, the reality is much different. Instead of some massive operation, Barcelona is instead paying attention to the finer details first.
For the club, it is much more feasible right now to tend to matters such as player renewals or possible exits. In terms of renewals, Wojciech Szczesny’s stay at the club has already been extended while Lamine Yamal’s renewal has essentially been signed already as well.
As for exits, the likes of Pablo Torre and Ansu Fati have already departed this summer. With their exits, Barcelona has been able to generate some much-needed income and has also freed up a rather significant amount as well.

However, with so much talk about exits, it is not surprising to see 23-year-old Gerard Martin also be brought up in those conversations. With Alejandro Balde being seen as the team’s undisputed starter, a lot of eyes are on Martin and what the future holds in store for him.
Yet, in a recent interview he did with Mundo Deportivo, the left-back made it clear enough that his motivations remain as clear as ever both in terms of a collective objective and his individual goals as well:
“A team goal: try to win everything. And personally, to always improve on last season and keep growing.”
Moreover, when discussing a potential exit this summer, he was clear that he does not want to leave the club and just hopes for the best in terms of the faith that the coach and club have in him:
“I don’t know if the things being said are true. If they were, someone would’ve told me directly. I’m really happy here at Barça, and I don’t want to leave. If the coach and the management believe in me, I couldn’t ask for more.”
Still, he was asked about the potential arrival of more players and whether or not more competition for his spot in the squad intimidates him:
“No, I’m calm. That kind of thing happens all the time in every position, and competition is good—it helps everyone improve.”

Continuing that trend of mature responses, the Spaniard was also asked about new signing Joan Garcia and his adjustment to the club so far:
“Yes, he’s good and happy. He was a great signing. Had a fantastic season with Espanyol.”
Interestingly, the topic and failed operation of Nico Williams was also addressed. In that case, however, Martin made it clear that he does not know much beyond the obvious events that took place:
“At that time, it was still early. Later on, I didn’t really keep up with it. It seemed like he was going to come, but in the end, he didn’t. I honestly don’t know much more.”
As for Gerard Martin himself, he finally gets to start off a season with Barcelona while being an established player already. He had to fight for opportunities previously, but at least this time he has the benefit of having Hansi Flick know who he is already thanks to last season.
