Rosenior was sacked on Wednesday following a run of five successive league defeats without scoring, with his final game a dismal 3-0 defeat to Brighton.

The 41-year-old is the second manager to depart Stamford Bridge this season following Enzo Maresca’s exit in January.

Joe Cole wants Xabi Alonso to be next Chelsea head coach

Calum McFarlane has been placed in temporary charge for the remainder of the season, and will lead Chelsea out at Wembley in Sunday’s semi final against Leeds.

McFarlane was in charge for games against Manchester City and Fulham earlier this season, but faces a very difficult task.

Attention has now turned to who will be the next head coach, and it’s understood seven or eight names are under consideration.

It’s been reported Andoni Iraola is the early frontrunner, and Cole has now named who he’d like to see get the job.

“The way the new owners have handled all of the managers since they came in, it will really narrow the pool because any top manager worth their salt will not want to come into this job,” he said as quoted by The Standard.

“It won’t be high up on their list, let’s say.

“I’d love to see Xabi Alonso at the club. I loved watching his [Bayer] Leverkusen team. I think he was hard done by at Real Madrid. He understands massive clubs. He’s a winner.

“The sad thing is, I don’t think Xabi Alonso would even consider Chelsea.”
