Cesar Peixoto arrives in English football as a relative unknown, Wolves opting for a leftfield pick reminiscent of Walter Zenga. ExpressAndStar.com reports the choice as one of the most surprising under Fosun.
Zenga, a former Italy international, made more than 300 Inter Milan appearances. Peixoto’s Portugal career is limited to a few late minutes in a 2008 friendly defeat to Brazil.
What links them is the speed of their moves. This will be Peixoto’s ninth job in just over seven years, with multiple returns along the way.
His best work has come at Gil Vicente, where last season they finished sixth in the Portuguese First Division. His 16 months in charge is the longest spell of his career so far.
He began as a left winger with Cacadores Taipas, then stepped up to Belenenses and Porto. A serious knee injury against Marseille in the Champions League stalled him. After loans to Guimaraes and Espanyol he switched to left-back, joined Braga in 2007 then Benfica in 2009, winning the league and cup double in 2010.
He ended his playing days with Gil Vicente, retiring in 2014. Management began nearly five years later at Varzim, keeping them up. Brief spells at Coimbra, Chaves and Moreirense followed, then two stints at Pacos Ferreira ended in relegation in 2023.
After a year out, he returned to Moreirense in summer 2024 but was sacked after seven months. He joined Gil Vicente weeks later, since when his trajectory has improved and Wolves will hope it continues.
