Bunny Shaw saves City late in the day

With her late winner against London City Lionesses on matchday 13, Bunny Shaw took her season tally to 13 league goals.

Shaw now has 13 goals in as many WSL games, keeping her on track to break the single-season scoring record in England.

It isn’t just the amount of goals Shaw is scoring that is so impressive as her timing couldn’t be any better.

The Jamaican international left it late once again on Sunday. City extended their lead atop the WSL thanks to Shaw’s winner in the 85th minute.

With her late goal giving City a win they so desperately needed, the club are now nine points clear in the title race.

Is Bunny Shaw the best in the world?

There aren’t many players who have performed better than Bunny Shaw this season.

City’s superstar isn’t just chasing the WSL golden boot, as she is also in the hunt for Europe’s top scorer award as well.

Europe’s top scorers

See below for the leading scorers in Europe’s top five competitions this season.

  • Ewa Pajor – 15 (Barcelona)
  • Claudia Pina – 14 (Barcelona)
  • Bunny Shaw – 13 (Manchester City)
  • Edna Imade – 11 (Real Sociedad)
  • Alexandra Popp – 10 (Wolfsburg)

Barcelona have played four more games than City in the league at this point in the campaign, which makes Shaw’s goal record all the more impressive.

The 28-year-old has the best conversion rate in Europe with an average of a goal a game for the league leaders.

There is still plenty of time for Shaw to catch up to her Spanish rivals in the European golden boot race.

City play Chelsea and Arsenal in their next two games and there will be no better time to score for the striker than in the upcoming season-defining matches for her team.

Could Shaw win the Ballon d’Or?

After such an impressive first half of the season, the Ballon d’Or isn’t out of question for Shaw.

There was a two-time Ballon d’Or winner in attendance at Manchester City’s game on Sunday. Alexia Putellas was joined by Barcelona teammate Patricia Guijarro as she watched the champions elect edge past London City Lionesses.

Players like Putellas do hold an advantage over Shaw for different reasons.

With City not competing in Europe, she has one less competition to stand out in compared to her rivals for the Ballon d’Or.

Shaw also has less of a chance due to her international allegiance. The veteran forward plays for Jamaica who are ranked 39th in the world which makes it hard for her to make an impression for her country.

Should City win the WSL, Shaw would definitely have a shot at the Ballon d’Or however it remains unlikely while her team aren’t competing in the Champions League.
