Goalkeeper James Trafford is open to leaving Manchester City this summer in search of more playing time, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg.

City are not prepared to sell Trafford but could struggle to persuade him to stay, with Gianluigi Donnarumma established as the first choice.

Brighton & Hove Albion consider Trafford a ‘dream target’ if Bart Verbrugge departs. RC Lens’ Robin Risser and SC Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu are also on their shortlist.

Trafford is wanted by several other Premier League clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.

Juventus are also monitoring his situation, with the club seeking competition for Michele Di Gregorio.

Trafford rejoined City from Burnley last summer, two years after initially leaving the club permanently. He was expected to become their first-choice goalkeeper following Ederson’s departure to Fenerbahce.

However, the Cityzens signed Donnarumma, leaving Trafford to play second fiddle.

His game time has been limited to the domestic competitions. He played a crucial role in last month’s League Cup final victory against Arsenal.

The 23-year-old has also been pivotal to City’s run to the FA Cup semi-final. They will face Southampton at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

Despite his limited opportunities, Trafford is expected to be named in England’s World Cup squad, although he is behind Jordan Pickford in the pecking order.

A move away from City could strengthen his chances of becoming England’s long-term number one, provided he secures regular playing time.

Villa would be a good destination if Emi Martinez leaves. They have a formidable squad and are well-placed to secure Champions League qualification.
