Javi Guerra marked his Spain debut in the friendly against Iraq, becoming the 20th Spain international to emerge from Valencia’s Paterna academy.

He came on in the 58th minute and partnered Turrientes in midfield. AS notes that Luis De la Fuente gave minutes to nine players from the early Las Rozas camp, who now begin their holidays after completing their assignment.

Guerra now features on the entrance mural at Paterna’s main building, which records Spain internationals developed by Valencia since 1992. The roll runs from Juan Sánchez to Mosquera, who made his debut as an Arsenal player.

He follows Hugo Guillamón as the most recent Valencia player to debut for Spain. Pepelu was later called up but did not win a cap. Guerra is the 75th to represent Spain while under contract at Valencia, a list begun by Cubells in 1925.

The appearance leaders with Spain as Valencia players are David Villa on 64 of his 98 caps, followed by Marchena on 62 and David Albelda on 51.

Guerra begins his holiday on Friday. Both club and player have signalled a quiet summer, with intentions not to sell and not to leave. Ron Gourlay told Carlos Corberán last week to count on him for next season, and the debut marks a first step towards settling with Spain after the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, with an eye on the next European Championship and the 2030 World Cup.
