Jérémy Mathieu pictured in surprising retail role after hanging up boots | OneFootball

Jérémy Mathieu, the former Valencia and Barcelona defender, has been pictured working in a high-street clothing store, with the image circulating on social media. The 41-year-old appears to have taken on a very different role after retirement.

Actu Foot reports that he is said to have taken the job by choice, spending one season in the business of a former team-mate.

Born at Sochaux, Mathieu moved to Toulouse before Valencia recruited him. After five years at Mestalla he joined Barcelona in a 20 million deal, departing as Juan Bernat left for Bayern and José Luis Gayà stepped up.

Once his Barcelona contract ended, he signed for Sporting de Lisboa, then took a sabbatical year and later finished his playing days with Luynes in France. He decided to hang up his boots in late 2023.

Long regarded as a singular character, Mathieu has said he has many problems, while reasons behind his new day job remain unclear. Time will tell.
