Joao Pedro’s interview on Brazil duty this week has gone semi viral within Chelsea Twitter world.
The striker speaks so calmly, with such authority, such “aura” as people say these days.
“Today I am the Joao Pedro I always wanted to be,” he says, with superb use of the third person to make himself sound cool.
Cole Palmer threads a pass to Joao Pedro who finishes neatly.
But even ice cold JP can get star struck, as he revealed in his really interesting long form chat with the Evening Standard today. He admitted that his first thoughts upon joining Chelsea were about what Cole Palmer would think of him:
“Cole is a superstar. When I came to Chelsea I was a little bit scared about how he was going to react, because I was the main guy at Brighton. I knew Chelsea would be different. I said: ‘Cole, I’m here to help you’.”
“He knows I can help him, and I know he can help me,” he says. “We have a good chemistry on the pitch; I think he feels the same. Together, we can win more titles for Chelsea.”
Sadly we’ve barely had time to see this chemistry develop. The pair started the first game of the season together, against a super tough Crystal Palace team, and couldn’t create anything of note. Since then, Palmer’s been bothered by a persistent groin injury.
By the end of this season, if they can both stay fit, we can’t wait to see what they’ll be producing. Palmer had a good understanding with the now departed Nicolas Jackson. If he can get something similar with JP going, we’re going to see a lot of goals and a lot of slick football at Stamford Bridge this season.
