Leeds United’s search for a creative no.10 could gain momentum in January, with Joe Rothwell potentially easing a path for Gustavo Hamer to Elland Road.

According to Leedsunited.news, Sheffield United are targeting Rothwell, a move that could make them more open to selling Hamer if a replacement is secured.

Since Daniel Farke arrived, Leeds have pursued an attacking midfielder. Georginio Rutter was converted into a 10 and impressed, but his switch to Brighton restarted the hunt.

Brenden Aaronson returned in summer 2024 and started 44 of 46 league games as the 10, yet Leeds also explored other options, including James McAtee and Fabio Carvalho, amid claims of a £13m Hamer bid.

The reigning Championship Player of the Season has had a tricky start this term, often rotated as Chris Wilder, back at Bramall Lane, assesses his best side.

Leeds had a bid rejected in 2024 and were linked again late in the last window. Hamer is approaching the final 18 months of his contract, reducing Sheffield United’s leverage.

Wilder said of Hamer’s future, “Keeping our best players. But if that time comes, if somebody comes in with an offer that we can’t refuse, we’ve got to put that to the board and see where we are from that”.

Rothwell left Leeds after a loan from Bournemouth and later joined Rangers, starting brightly before losing his place. A move to Bramall Lane could help unlock Leeds’ long-term pursuit of Hamer.
