Whether Joshua Zirkzee stays or leaves Manchester United remains a mystery.
Two full seasons at Old Trafford and the Dutch striker is yet to fully establish himself at the club. Erik ten Hag, then Ruben Amorim, and now Michael Carrick have all not been keen to hand him a key role.
His struggle for game time has seen him constantly linked with a move away from the club. Yet every time those rumours surface, he ends up staying. While talk of a summer exit has done the rounds once more, there remains a real chance he stays put.
That uncertainty, in turn, has held United’s attacking transfer plans hostage. INEOS have no desire to force him out; he may still want to stay and fight for his spot, but should an offer arrive, he will be allowed to leave on United’s terms.
If anyone moves for Zirkzee, it will likely be a Serie A club. He was a massive hit for Bologna in Italy, consistently delivering quality performances in the league.
AC Milan, in particular, are keen to sign him as a replacement for United target Christian Pulisic, though Amorim may yet block the move, as Carlo Pellegatti explains on his YouTube channel:
“Playing behind the striker as an attacking midfielder.
“There’s one name nobody has mentioned, and I’ll even put it in the title: could Ruben Amorim perhaps have an idea for Joshua Zirkzee?
“A lot of people have told me, ‘No, absolutely not, Amorim doesn’t like him at all and has never really considered him.’
“But I think if Milan were to lose Christian Pulisic, Zirkzee seems like the ideal profile to play behind a central striker because of the movements he makes.”
Whether Milan overrules Amorim and pushes ahead regardless remains to be seen.
The “real baller”, United’s number 11, as Lee Sharpe dubbed him while labelling him a future “superstar”, may well head back to Italy and thrive.
For all his qualities, one thing that has held Zirkzee back at United is the Premier League’s tempo. The Italian game is played at his pace, and Amorim might be wise to reconsider and green-light a reunion.
Should Zirkzee leave, INEOS may well turn to an experienced striker, Robert Lewandowski or even Pulisic, to deputise for Benjamin Sesko.
Matheus Cunha, who has proven a massive hit at the World Cup as a false nine for Brazil, is another option who may deputise for Sesko, potentially paving the way for a left-winger signing, with Crysencio Summerville firmly in the picture.
