Liverpool’s Transfer Plans: Finding the Heir to Mo Salah’s Throne

With the international break upon us, focus has returned to the situations unravelling away from the pitch currently. Most notably, the future of Liverpool stars Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who all only have eight months left on their current contracts at the club.

Yesterday we had the news that defensive duo Jarell Quansah and Ibou Konate have agreed new contracts at the club and today attentions seem to be turning to potential incomings as we move closer to the January transfer window.

Liverpool have of course made a brilliant start to the season under new head coach Arne Slot and according to recent reports by Florian Plettenberg, the Dutchman is looking to strengthen his current squad even further in the next transfer window. With that being said, let’s take a look at the two names being linked with a switch to Merseyside…

Omar Marmoush (Eintracht Frankfurt)

The electric Egyptian forward has been linked with a move to the Premier League over the past few years, but his impressive form so far this season has added further fuel to those reports. Marmoush has already registered eight goals and four assists in six Bundesliga appearances, which are simply outrageous numbers. Across all competitions, the 25-year-old has nine goals and six assists in nine appearances for the Bundesliga club.

Since joining Frankfurt, Marmoush has scored 20 goals in 35 Bundesliga appearances, which suggests this run of form isn’t just a purple patch but more of a natural progression by a talented player. His impressive club form has also earned him 32 senior caps for Egypt, where he has played regularly alongside Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

The 25-year-old is mostly deployed as a central striker, but is also capable of playing on the left-wing and even on the right-hand side. With the recent struggles of both Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota under Slot, it’s perfectly reasonable to expect the Reds to be looking at strengthening that position in the transfer market. This is definitely one to keep an eye on, for sure.

Karim Adeyemi (Borussia Dortmund)

As well as Marmoush, reports continue to link Dortmund forward Adeyemi with a move to Merseyside. The German forward is a younger option that Marmoush and has also had an impressive start to the 2024/25 season. So far this season, the 22-year-old has managed two goals and three assists in five Bundesliga appearances.

However, he has also impressed in the UEFA Champions League, with three goals and one assist in two appearances in that competition. With 240 senior appearances to his name at the age of 22, Adeyemi has huge experience for a player of his age but has also had a pretty patchy injury record, which may concern the Reds.

It’s also important to note that Adeyemi’s best position is on the left-wing, which is arguably Liverpool’s strongest area on the pitch with both Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo playing at an outstanding level this season. The German can play down the middle or off the right, although his performances are often nowhere near as impactful.

Looking Ahead

Out of these two names, Marmoush interests me the most and it’s a move that I could see Liverpool making. Of course, it would raise serious questions over the future of Darwin Nunez particularly but the Egyptian could definitely bring a new dynamic to the Reds’ attack.

I suspect that a move for either of these forwards would depend heavily on the decision that Mohamed Salah makes regarding his expiring contract at Anfield. Although, even then I would expect Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards to target a direct replacement for the Egyptian King, unless Arne Slot has a genius plan up his sleeve…
