The Englishman made his breakthrough with the first team during Erik ten Hag’s reign. His superb display in the FA Cup final against Manchester City earned him the fanbase’s adoration.
The youngster’s momentum was halted by Ruben Amorim’s arrival, as he saw himself relegated to the bench. The Portuguese manager decided to field his compatriot, Bruno Fernandes, as part of the double pivot, while identifying Mainoo as his understudy.
Therefore, the latter didn’t earn a single Premier League start this season under the former Sporting CP head coach.
Mainoo’s miserable situation prompted him to request a transfer in the middle of the season. However, Michael Carrick arrived just in time to salvage his future at Old Trafford.
Since the 44-year-old’s appointment, the England international has been ever-present in the starting lineup, joining forces with Casemiro in the double pivot, with Fernandes operating in his original No.10 role.
In recent days, The Athletic journalist David Ornstein revealed that Man Utd have made significant strides in their negotiations with Mainoo and Harry Maguire, with both players expected to pen new deals.
On Tuesday, Fabrizio Romano revealed are on the cusp of finalising the midfielder’s contract extension until June 2031.
“Manchester United are closing in on new deal for Kobbie Mainoo after talks reported since January — valid until June 2031,” posted the Italian journalist on his X account.
“New deal for Kobbie was a priority since he returned key player under Carrick. Final details needed, not done yet but close. MUFC optimistic.”
This news will be music to the ears of Man Utd supporters, considering the player’s status as a fan favourite among the Red Army.
The MUFC academy product is currently one of the club’s lowest earners within the first team, earning circa £20,000 per week. Therefore, it was past time for INEOS to rectify the situation and reward the midfielder for his ever-growing impact on the pitch.
Mainoo is not only a greatly talented player, but he has also been praised for his phenomenal work rate. Moreover, he is the only central midfielder who is certain to stay at Carrington beyond the summer, as Casemiro is set to depart, and Manuel Ugarte could follow suit.
The youngster will thus be paired with new teammates next season, but regardless of the identity of the new arrivals, he’ll be expected to play a major role at United for years to come.
