Kaoru Mitoma trained with Albion three days before Brighton face Liverpool, though his involvement remains uncertain.

According to TheArgus.co.uk, images from Wednesday morning at Lancing showed the Japan winger working with the group on fitness drills, and also joining a ball session.

That contrasted with a photo from Friday, when he was clearly working alone. He then missed the trip to Sunderland, where replacement Yankuba Minteh scored the only goal.

After that match, head coach Fabian Hurzeler said he expected both Mitoma and Carlos Baleba to be back in contention for Liverpool. He explained scans showed no injury, and that pain management kept Mitoma out. He added he thinks the winger should be back next week, after failing to train at full intensity on Friday.

Baleba was also involved in Wednesday’s session. He travelled to Wearside but was not deemed ready to play after a minor issue.

Mitoma has enjoyed notable moments against Liverpool, including a decisive FA Cup winner in 2022-23, and an influential cameo in a late-season comeback last term.

Hurzeler has selection competition, with Charalampos Kostoulas aiming to return to the matchday squad. It would be no surprise if he kept an unchanged starting XI against Liverpool.
