The full-back is reportedly weighing up his options after the 43-year-old's shock exit

With the Championship campaign still two months away from getting underway in 2026/27, the division has already seen plenty of drama take place in the early weeks of pre-season, with much of that coming on the managerial front.

However, the main story in this regard came on Thursday morning, when news broke that Rob Edwards was relieved of his duties by newly-relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers, just eight months after taking the reins at Molineux following the club's unsurprising decision to part ways with Vitor Pereira.

It has been eight years since the Old Gold and Black were seen in the Championship, and since then, their supporters have certainly been on an emotional rollercoaster, both in terms of league finishes and a handful of key decisions made by ownership group, Fosun.

That has now taken another considerable twist, with Edwards reportedly only being informed by the club's decision to hand him his P45 in the West Midlands via a phone call, having seen social media reports come to light late on Wednesday.

It has since been widely reported that Gil Vicente's Portuguese head coach, Cesar Peixoto, is poised to take over in WV1, with Nathan Shi and Co's decision leaving the masses perplexed.

And, it appears as though such feelings have spread to the first-team squad in this part of the Black Country, including new signing, Kieran Trippier.

Indeed, it was reported last month that Wanderers had considered the possibility of a transfer move for the experienced full-back, before the 'verbal agreement' of a two-year deal with the option of a third year had concluded between the relevant parties.

Trippier had spent the past four-and-a-half years at Newcastle United after moving to St James' Park for £12m from Atlético Madrid, where he had become the club's first signing under the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund's ownership, before going on to make 160 appearances and captain the Magpies to their first major trophy in 60 years through the EFL Cup success over Liverpool in March 2025.

After such intense speculation, the 54-time England international saw his transfer, which would become official on July 1st - the start date of 2026/27 - confirmed earlier in the week, alongside the return of Mexican international and former cult hero, Raul Jimenez, who has netted in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup versus South Africa.

However, after it had been claimed in the wake of Edwards' exit that Trippier, as well as many Wolves colleagues, have been left enraged by developments, an even greater twist has reportedly followed.

According to Pete O'Rourke, the 35-year-old is considering cancelling his agreement with the Midlands club, with his aforementioned stance being backed up within the update, believing he has 'misled'.

However, contrasting updates have since come from the Express and Star, also via X, with their reporter Liam Keen claiming that it is not true that Trippier is eyeing up a swift departure from Molineux.

Following confirmation of the aforementioned agreement, it was clear to see how much involvement Edwards had on luring Trippier to Wolves' upcoming rebuild, with the 43-year-old stating: “I’m so happy to bring him here.

“When we met, it was evident that he really wants to come to Wolves," Edwards added.

Such takes are, unsurprisingly, one of the several reasons why there is strong confusion over the managerial twist at Molineux, even if Edwards didn't full endear himself to the fanbase he had previously played in front of whilst in the dugout.

Even more so, if Trippier is to cancel his agreement, it could leave Wanderers extremely short-changed at right-back ahead of the summer transfer market.

Matt Doherty's second spell at the club will officially come to an end on June 30th, meaning Cameroonian international, Jackson Tchatchoua, would be the natural first-choice ahead of Ki Jana-Hoever, who failed to impress on loan at Sheffield United from January onwards, and 19-year-old, Pedro Lima.

Ultimately, it is a rather messy situation which could have huge implications on the upcoming 46-game Championship season in so many ways.
